The Chipping Sparrows have arrived. Are the Siskins close behind?

I guess our catbirds are gone, too. We love seeing them.
The Mockingbird returned to my backyard today, looking around. Had to run out with jelly. Hope he sees it. Last time he stayed a few days.

Lue you have my Chippers; Red-winged Blackbirds are coming through now. Keeping my fingers crossed for Evening Grosbeaks and Redpolls.

The siskins arrived here this morning--only 7, so far. I hope that's all I get--took me till April to clean up all the poop after last year's onslaught! Wow, if the redpolls move south again this year, l2b, it would be 4 out of the past 5 years! I think that's some sort of record--well, a personal record, anyway. heheh Probably in the annals of history, there have been longer streaks... Our summer visitors are pretty much gone now and the juncos, Red fox sparrows, and White-throated sparrows have arrived. It's very slow at the feeders, which is good for my budget, but sad for the entertainment factor...

Haven't seen any juncos or White-throated Sparrows yet. Never saw a Red fox sparrow.

Sounds like the migration is moving along! No Siskins or GOFI here. We'll be gone for 10-12 days so I'll fill my winter feeders - but this is a great time of year for the birds around here. Tons/millions/billions of native grass seed. They won't miss my seed much. They'll have water too, but in a different location. Hopefully, they'll find it quickly.
I've seen the Lesser Goldfinchs feasting on flower seeds. There is two particular ones they seem to like best and they are in abundance.

Thankfully, the siskins didn't stick around and bring their friends. Maybe they're headed your way, Lue! Barbara, if you see Fox sparrows at all, they're probably Red fox sparrows. There are a few subspecies of Fox sparrow...we usually get the Red subspecies (I think Sibley also calls them Taiga). They're the ones most common in the eastern US.

I had a pair of golden kinglets today. They are so cute. I've only seen them a couple of times over the years for a day here and there. I've also had large groups of cowbirds (happens every year) and a pigeon who seems to show up when I'm invaded by either grackles or cowbirds. The pigeon is pretty good at cleaning up everything under the feeder so at least she is useful

LOL Do you think she follows the big flocks of blackbirds around, knowing they'll spill seed from feeders? We've been seeing a fair number of golden-crowned kinglets, too--I'm hoping that means the little cuties have had a good year!

We were gone for 11 days beginning Oct. 22. The Siskins arrived the day before we left. Put up extra feeders of sunflower for them and the finches before we left (didn't have thistle on hand). All went well and there are several here now. Hopefully not too many - but just enough!

The pigeon has been back a few times. Each time its when the grackles invade. LOL, she flops down with the big group of them. She's a groupie.

I don't even have Grackles. Oh where O where have my birdies gone, Oh where Oh where can they be. Had a flock of geese fly into the pond, which I can not see with all the leaves missing from the trees. Looks like a real yuck of a bond. great for snakes and toads and turtles. It is so surrounded by trees brush people can't get near it. Lots of ticks. I can also see the seagulls flying over by the lagoon a block away. I hope this is just a fluke. Ginny H.

Hi Ginny........I do not have Grackles either, and I haven't seen one Starling yet, not that I'm complaining. Maybe the Starling population all went back to Europe? wouldn't that be wonderful.
Hoping others will chime in here and let us know if they are experiencing the same thing.
