Beautiful pics, Ginny! You're way ahead of us. Our orioles have yet to appear and no hummers, either. The towhees have been back for a week or so and I saw my first rose-breasted grosbeak this morning, though, so things are looking up! The excitement for the week is the Red-headed woodpecker that's been visiting the suet every morning for the past 4 days. They're not rare in the area--but unusual for our yard since we're too far in the woods for their comfort. It's been about 15 degrees below normal, so it may be here just till it warms up, but we'll enjoy watching it for as long as it graces us with its presence.

oh how wonderful for you to enjoy the red headed woodpecker. I have NEVER seen one. not in Ma. NJ Down south. NOTA... I checked the cape may count today they had so many listed. It is chilly again. 49 right now with winds gust 17. this time of night is nice. i get the cat bird, chipping sparrows, black caps come to the window feeder. cardinals, there is a redwing on my tray feeder acting like there is no food for him. standing next to a cup of raspberry jelly. I had bought to bake cookies but never did. I am surprised the cat bird is not all over that. just saw him at the orange. did not see the orial today. I just ordered a new orial jelly orange holder. think mint is in Ma. How are you doing with tick. we are getting warnings all the time of how many they are increased. A man in Ct took a run with his dog around the reservoir and pulled 37 off his dog. We have had three there since easter. I did have a deer female walking the yard the other day. she was right up to the fence part of the yard walking around to the side yard. That is were i throw scraps. Cantalope shell and such. cores. No rose breasted yet. I am seeing more of the female hummingbird. she must have set up home. Never do find the nest. I saw a nest at the reservoir last summer and the wind had blown it away in days. I was in shock when i saw it and reported it to the nature center. They did not mark the spot so i could not find it next trip. When i follow my hummingbirds they usually fly to the branch and watch the feeder. this red wing is not giving up it is 7:30. pm.. Good night Ginny H.

Love the photos. Wow, a red headed woodpecker! I've never seen one either.
The cat birds arrived 2 days early! One flew the patio a minute after I walked outside, grabbed his grape then came back for more. They are the sweetest birds I love having them around.
Mr. Duck flopped from the sky on Sunday evening. He was making rumbling sounds looking up and all around for her. I think they will return. I put out their little pool this evening & have duck food so I am all ready for them.

Yay! I love your ducks, downylover! I got a few really bad pics of the red-headed woodpecker through the window, but I'm hoping, at some point, to get the blind up and get some better shots. It's been so wet that any attempt would have been extremely muddy and the blind would probably have sunk into the 'swamp' that is our front yard --but it was mostly dry today and tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, so maybe it'll be dry enough to support the blind! On another note, I hung the first hummingbird feeder today. Now we wait impatiently... LOL

I saw Mr. Duck once after then nothing for a few days. They both just flew in! Mrs. Duck waddle ran to her pool quacking. She went right on her step and into the pool. They stayed for about 40 minutes, eating quite a bit. She went in her pool 5 times in between eating. He eats much less than her & stands guard by her where ever she roams. He hissed and chased a starling (thank you!) who landed near her. They're usually gone by the end of June so I'm hoping to get 5 or 6 weeks of them visiting.

Our ducks in Ma. do the same , we have the lake but they come for the corn and he watches while she eats. We will head to the lake this week see how birds are doing. Finn became allergic to peanuts so no food with peanut in them. We put all our in garage over easter. Gonna bring up sunflower seeds. safflower. Today I was laying on the couch watching a movie and saw up in the tree tops over the pond some movement that did not look like a squirrel. Windy and the trees kept moving blocking my view. It was the osprey from the field on the other side of the house. looked like a branch had fallen and he was on the bare wood eating his catch. I tried every window all have screens and with that wind the view was blocked. I went and laid down as he flew off. He came back ten minutes later but did not stay as long. Best window was in the bedroom, I asked al to take the screen out. Of course he did not come back. Once the trees bloom it is hard to get photo's. this was the best of 20 shots. Hummingbirds have been hard to get a photo also. The balt. or. and catbirds stay nice and still and enjoy their jelly like good birds. lol ginny h.

I've never had any luck with any bird eating oranges or jelly. The oranges sit there unpecked until I throw them out. I tried jelly for the catbirds and nothing. I even tried putting it on the ground because mine don't seem to like going up to the feeders. They stepped it and kept going. Grapes, blueberries and the peanut butter/cornmeal mixture are what the go for. They fly right down for the peanut butter stuff. Mr. Duck came alone this afternoon. I was planting a fern in a pot and I heard a low quack. I didn't hear him fly in but there he was right behind me. He waddled away and watched me go inside and get his food. He'll come within 2-3 feet of me but waddle away if I try to move closer. He's not too afraid, he moves slow. I cleaned out and refilled her pool and she didn't show Love all your photos. The oriole singing is such a great photo.

Nice pix, Ginny! No catbirds here, yet...and we only rarely see ospreys (how cool to be able to see them out your windows!) so I don't know if they've returned to the area or not. Our orioles are back, though, and storming the grape feeders. The Rose-breasted grosbeaks are helping them! We're almost through our first jar of grape jelly. O.O Also, finally have 2 hummers (first male showed up yesterday with another arrival today)...so the sugar bar is open! Grape and sugar water! What's not to love! LOL

So you'll be buying 50lbs of sugar a week to feed all the hummers you get! Hummer Happy Hour at Hazel's is open for the season.
