Wow, love all the pictures. You're going to have so many woodpecker babies with all of those around. I've wanted rose-breasted grosbeaks forever. I had a female once for 5 minutes and that's been it. Hopefully I am next in line for a red headed woodpecker!

Thanks, l2b! Glad you enjoyed the pics. Sort of a sad day today--we got an influx of new hummers up from the south and amongst them was a sickly female. I dropper-fed her for a bit and put her in a protected place in the garden, but she was in rough shape and died just a little while ago. I hate when that happens. Not sure if she ran afoul of someone's dirty feeders on the way north or if there was some other underlying problem and the stresses of migration did her in. Made me sad, though. I know how heart wrenching this is, you did your best, but God took her anyway; He must of needed this beauty for His own garden.

It would be nice if the Red-headed woodpeckers were expanding into their old range again! There used to be so many of them when we were youngsters--they were commonplace anywhere with some open area around trees--parks, backyards, around lakes, farm country... Now they're almost rare in some of their old haunts. But it does seem like the past few years, we're seeing more of them again! As for Rose-breasted grosbeaks, I think we have at least 10 nesting pairs this year, which means my BOSS bill is going to be big this summer! Our oddball this year is a Northern harrier male who hunts out here. The birds aren't particularly upset--I think NOHA are mostly rodent/rabbit specialists--but they do startle into the balsam from the feeder when it flies through. It looks so BIG when it's close by and in the yard--soaring over farm fields where it belongs, it would look much smaller! It startles me, too, when I see it. Gorgeous bird, though. I flies up the road in front of the house, perhaps from the lake, where it's more open terrain and may offer it some hunting opportunities, and then turns west to fly up the powerline right-of-way. Very cool! Oh, and my male cardinal is still singing out there! Not sure where he's been all these months--maybe it's a brand new bird--but I suspect he must have attracted a mate, or he wouldn't be sticking around. So nice to hear him again!

I know how heart wrenching this is, you did your best, but God took her anyway; He must of needed this beauty for His own garden. I always say a little prayer, that if He's going to take them, please take them quickly and painlessly as possible. And she went pretty quickly. I like the idea of her flitting around in God's Garden. Thanks for that image, l2b!

I somehow missed that the bird died earlier. I'm so sorry. Each year there's always a blue jay baby or two that doesn't make it and it makes me so sad.

It's very sad. But I keep reminding myself that it's Nature's way...and without death, there wouldn't be any life at all... Still...
