PetSmart sells a 10lb bag of peanuts without the shells for $16.99. Its so much cheaper than buying the jars at $3+ per lb. They stay great in a couple of large zip lock bags or tupperware like containers. The downside for me of buying the big bag is that I am extra generous and blow through them. I look at the bagful and think "well there's so many so let's put a bunch out - peanuts for everyone!". Then suddenly the bag is gone, lol.

Not only that, but I would be nibbling away at them, too. They sell the bags in my supermarket, shelled and unshelled. I can also take a look in Walmart's, but I don't think I've seen them there.

We're getting 10 lbs at Farm and Fleet for about $10. So check any local farm stores you might have near you--they do seem to have good prices on a lot of feeding supplies. Grain mills also usually have good deals--I can get 50# of sunflower hearts for about $41, which is way better than even WalMart can match! Unfortunately, grain mills don't usually carry out-of-the-shell peanuts...at least not around here...

If you have an Agway near you, they sell peanuts in the shell by the 25 Lb. bag. Be sure to become a Feathered Friend Member. Agway will keep track of how many pounds of bird feed you buy, it's continuous, after so many pounds, they will give you $10.00 off your next bird feed purchase. It is a free program.

That sounds like a good deal l2b, but we don't have an Agway. I'm happy with Walmart's bird seed--it's inexpensive and "looks" really good. No weeds growing from the seed that's tossed on the ground. The squirrels get most of that, anyway. But one time someone told me to buy the cheap bag--that it was very good. I did, and we had "corn" cropping up all the around the feeders. Never again. (The kind I buy at Walmart's is Pennington mixed) It also has lots of sunflower seed in it, too.

I don't have Agway or any kind of farm store. BarbK, which Pennington do you buy? I looked at Walmart's web site and there's many different ones. Walmart is a pain for me to go to but if I'm near there maybe I'll give it a try. Petsmart is pricey but the blend I get has safflower and nuts in it too so all the birds seem to love it. In the summer/fall when I get blackbirds, etc. (and the birds have plenty of good for them natural food around) I mix in the cheaper mix here and there. In the winter I stick with the good stuff because I have so many less birds and I feel like I should give them the good stuff in the harsh weather.
Today I bought grapes that were discounted. They're a bit soft so the yard is getting a yummy treat today. The cardinals and catbirds were feasting; they don't seem to mind that they're a little soft (they taste fine I ate some too, lol).

downylover, I buy the Pennington mixed seed. I empty the bag into a metal can, so I don't have the bag. But next time I get it, I'll give you the exact name. I like that the kind you get has safflower and nuts mixed in. I'll have to look for something like that, too for the winter. I'm overrun with house sparrows. I guess that will now be permanent. Never had them before Sandy which destroyed a lot of our trees.

I buy Songbird Blend by All Living Things. I think its only sold at PetSmart. Stokes Songbird Blend (I bought it online once) seems to be the same thing, at least it was when I got it.

Will look for the songbird blend in Walmart's. They have all kinds. Pet Smart is not that convenient for me.

Downey I have been also doing that , I call it LAST CALL. lol I sit in my chair and watch through the window. When life takes us away and I come home at dark I feel bad I missed the best show in town. Right now it is 7:30. Moving up as the time of day gets darker. I have been doing through much more bird seed the past few weeks. Increased the size we are putting out. Only one suet due to the heat. The doves have been so bossy. I often tell them time is up.. Give other birds a chance. We have a few spread out feeders but the tray is the one i see most. That is where the cardinals like to eat. One of my trees is bare in the middle and lush on the outer parts . I like to put a metal tray hanger in there. The squirrels have access to that so i also add to that at 7 pm. While i have been typing this i have been watching a house finch on the spring tube feeder for a long time. Not moving. looking at me. No other birds are here and Al just came home so I was not sure if he disturbed them. I did see feathers fly through the air but just small white ones like preening. Now the blue jays have come a calling and that house finch is gone. Have a safe Labor day to All. P S the cardinals flew in with red feathers flying and again the white doves feathers as they came in. lol

hutchgigi, what you're watching out your window is better than any TV show!

A mockingbird came for last call tonight. Flew right to the patio and waited. He ate the catbird treat and grapes. He made 4 trips. I haven't seen one come for food since late spring.

Awesome that your mockingbird came last night, downylover! Do they migrate?
Ginny, I find windows and feeders to be so much more entertaining than TV--especially in an election year. heheh
