Here's a pic from March of 2013 of one being held just before release after banding: Clarice has small hands, but you can see that the shrike is not very big. Luckily, shrikes don't seem to be inclined to use those bills in self-defense, either...nary a peck out of any of the shrikes we've banded to date! For comparison, here are a few shots of the same person holding a blue jay: Wow! They really are small, the Blue Jay is much bigger. Thanks for sharing Hazel; that is a real eye-opener.

Good photos for sizing Hazel, thanks! I haven't seen a shrike for years. We had them in FL, small town near Tampa, back in the 70's. They used to hang bugs on the barbed wire; we called them "butcher birds". They really are pretty; too bad they like other birds for their meals.

Those are Loggerhead shrikes that far south, aren't they? They call the Northern shrikes up here "butcher birds", too--for the same reason. Fascinating critters, even if they do sometimes eat birds. I have to say, though, that I'm much happier when they're taking small rodents...
