Can't get any pictures till the morning, but we had a line of storms come through tonight that did a bit of damage to the trees along the fence. One of our 80-ft balsams was snapped off about 12 feet up and crashed onto the neighbor's property. (We all must be getting old--the dogs mostly slept through the storm and neither hubby nor I heard the tree go over. LOL In our defense, though, the wind was roaring, so hearing a thud, no matter how massive, would be a little more difficult... ) At any rate, it's one of our warbler trees, but it's been at death's door for a while now. It was old and not very robust and at least this saves us having to make the decision as to when to take it down. Luckily, it fell away from the house (which is only 45 feet away) and missed the fence (which is only about 10 ft away), and there's nothing but shrubs on the neighbor's property, so it'll just be a straight cleanup. I had pulled all the feeders in a few minutes before the storm hit, so at least I won't have to replace any of them! I'm hoping to convince hubby to leave the remaining trunk up for the woodpeckers but I don't think he'll go for it--put a chainsaw in his hands and his Inner Lumberjack takes over. Hard to stop a man who's armed with a chainsaw! O.O LOL Tomorrow I'll post a pic of what it looks like now, but in this February picture, it's the first large tree you can see along the fence beyond the feeders. It fell (as far as we can tell in the dark) angling to the right and toward the road as seen from the perspective of this picture. It'll be interesting to see how the birds react to the changes in the feeder line. Attachment Deleted

I had read about the storm hitting the Midwest yesterday! Sounds like quite a storm. Glad the tree fell "the right way" and saved your fence, house, etc. If the balsam was less than strong, I imagine that is why it came down - and it was "first in line". The woodpeckers would like the stump - but it's hard to stop a man and his chain saw! LOL

I'm glad the tree missed your house, etc. Going by your photos I think the birds won't have any trouble finding trees to nest if your hubby and his chain saw win out

That's true, downylover, but I was hoping to get some decent shots of pileated woodpeckers at that tree! hubby was out early to take care of the fallen stuff--and he hasn't mentioned wanting to cut down the bole, yet, so maybe I convinced him to leave it!! Or maybe he's just out of shape and is too tired to do it today! LOL The finches are going crazy back there--goldfinches and siskins both! And I flushed a turkey from inside the fallen part this morning when I was filling the feeders. That was a rush! LOL They're so noisy when they're taking off!!

Hope he will allow you to keep tree trunk up for the woodpeckers.

So far so good! He's cleaned up most of the fallen trunk and a lot of the brushy stuff, and the standing trunk is still there. He hasn't mentioned anything about taking it down, either! I think I'm going to hang up a suet station on the trunk and see if the pileateds are interested!

Now that's a good idea. And you 'claim ownership', against the chainsaw!!

Still up! And there's one branch left for hanging a seed feeder I've got some pics...just gotta edit them. Pretty pathetic looking, my poor old tree!

But it will have a "new life" in its re-purposed role!

Maybe not. Hubby is making plans for it...all of them involve taking down at least 8 feet of what's left.
