I have been using the beta version of the Merlin and find that it is correct about 75% of the time on the first hit and nearly 100% on going down the list (second or third hit). Are any of you using it? and what success rate are you finding? It is an interesting and useful tool for me. John

I've not tried it John but you're the second person recommending it. May have to "give it a go".

Just curious, John--are you trying it for identifying birds you don't know and are trying to ID, or are you just testing it on birds you know to see how well it works? We don't get signal out here, so I don't have a mobile device to test it out on. I've had people ask me about Merlin and whether I recommend it, but I've only accessed it through the PC for birds that I already knew...just to see how well it works. My experience is like yours--usually can find it by the 2nd hit, but it failed as miserably as I did on the Alder/Willow flycatcher ID (but then, it takes an expert and a vocalization from the bird to separate those two, so I can't really blame Merlin). Some day I'd like to try it in an area with unfamiliar birds to see how well it works on birds I don't know...

I didn't even think of an app version!! No signal here either. I was told of the desktop version - thought I'd try it with the NM flycatcher life bird we had - haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hmmm...come to think of it, I guess I don't know if they've gotten the app version out, yet, or not... I know it's in the works--I thought maybe that was the beta version John was working with?

I am using the beta version on my PC. I tested it with known birds and then on birds that I had some question about. I think they have about 250 birds on it--so far and are adding more. Other course you need a picture of the bird that you are trying to ID---and the picture must shown the bill, eye, and tail.

Hello guys, I had done a lot of man hours on Merlin a few years back. Really got hooked on it. Today we were down in cape may at the flight migration and also did some trail walking. It would be nice to get a clear shot photo lol . I do have Merlin on my phone and i answered the questions and got the right bird. Both birds the first time. lets see if you guys agree on the bird Merlin came up with.
