Husband told me earlier this afternoon to get my binox and look at the back table...I did and could not believe my eyes There was a female rose breasted grosbeak eating like a trooper. They never arrive here for fall until September 25/26 as colder temps hit way up north of us. I cannot imagine why they'd be here now. Such a nice surprise!

She's early! Do you think she'll stick around now that she's arrived?

You're so lucky if she stays. Mine arrive here in May, like clockwork.

We don't know if she'll stay as we've never had one this time of year. They come thru April 25/26 each spring and September 25/26 each fall so I cannot imagine what brought the one now. A few weeks ago, the TV weatherman said we were seeing smoke/haze here from fires in Canada so I don't know if they might have been smoked out way up north and traveled down here way ahead of schedule...it is a mystery to us.

What fun to have a surprise visitor. When I retired, one of my gifts was Sibley's 2nd edition. All the distribution maps are updated. Lots of change. Here's a scanned image of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. It spends summers pretty far south these days, probably due to so many backyard feeders. Orange on the map is summer/breeding. When I visited with HRM and the pack a couple weeks back there were RBGR at her place in central WI. She said they had a good nesting/fledgling year there. All about birds also shows them pretty close to SE Illinois. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rose-breasted_Grosbeak/idAttachment Deleted

Ours are definitely on the move south already. We're still seeing a lot of youngsters, but the numbers are on a slow decline and the adults are getting scarce. Watch for bands, happybirder--maybe they're heading to your place!
