For those of you who remember the Pack, this will be a surprise: Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedI was about to bring in the feeders last night when I heard a strange sound. Sounded like baby birds and I was trying to figure out if they were catbirds, red-eyed vireos, veerys or rose-breasted grosbeaks when this little fella slipped around the garage, under two gates and through two yards to jump in my arms, meowing pitifully the whole way. Poor guy appears to have been dumped in the forest and left to fend for himself. Definitely a recent development--he's not at all feral and doesn't have any ticks. He was also very hungry and scared. He's a non-stop purrinator, too. Called the shelter today but it'll be a week or two at the earliest before a spot opens for him--so as of now, JD is a 'foster'. My hunch is that, if he gets along well with the Pack, we'll end up just keeping the little tyke. (We get attached easily. o.o) He'll be indoor only, of course--except when he's out in the screened porch on the shed with us--so the birds will be safe; and JD will be safe from coyotes, wolves, bobcats, eagles and hawks... Once we found out he'd be here a while we took him to our vet. He's got an upper respiratory infection of some sort so he's on antibiotics for 2 wks, and he has ear mites, but otherwise seems to be in fairly good health. And what a good boy! When he got checked out at the vet, he hopped from the table to the counter and into the sink to give them a stool sample! LOL They didn't even have to ask. If he's healthy enough by then, he'll go back in two weeks for his first set of needles. Now all we have to do is figure out how to take care of a cat... And cat-proof the house, of course... o.o

Oh, and I forgot to tell you how he got his name. He's soooooo vocal. Does a lot of singing. So he's J.D., short for John Denver. heheh

JD's coming along pretty well, but I wish his URI would clear up. Poor little dude is sneezing snot all over the place--but at least his nose isn't bleeding any more... Anyone know how long a URI usually lasts? He met some of the dogs one-on-one today--looks like he'll be fine with Cass, Grace and Ember. I think Ridge will be okay, too. Brier is still a work in progress...

Still recovering from his URI, but yesterday he started to play and even groom a little. Brier is still being an ass around the cat, but the rest of the Pack is doing well! Cass is still playing the mother--she licks his face, which is pretty grubby, in an attempt to clean him up a little! Hazel, you are wonderful rescuing this cat. Cats and dogs are my favorites. We've had cats only, but I did have a dog when I was a kid, and my family and I still mourn him. You will get a lot of joy out of the cat, too, and judging from some of my friends who do not hesitate to bring home both cats and dogs, they always seem to fall in line and get along. Thank you so much for what you did for this poor animal. You will be in my prayers. And that includes your husband, too.

I've had both and love both. I agree with BarbK, eventually they'll all tolerate, if not love, one another. And that you guys are wonderful for taking him in. If the other dogs are OK with him the holdout will go along with the others at some point. If you've never had a cat I think you'll really enjoy having one around. I think cats get a bad rap sometimes always being referred to as aloof and independent. They have lots of love to give too.
Growing up we had 3 dogs and later added 4 stray cats. One of the dogs wasn't a fan of the kittys but tolerated them knowing she'd be yelled at if she went after the cats. So, she'd "air bite" as they'd go by her then wag her tail if anyone looked at her and she knew she was caught. I swear one cat just liked to mess with her so she'd go sit on the couch about a foot away and take a nap.

Aw, we're not so wonderful--just incredibly soft-hearted! LOL We have an incredible affinity for soft furry or feathered creatures... Much to our dogs' dismay--because they think dogs rule and cats (and birds and rabbits and squirrels and deer and turkeys, etc) drool! Thanks for the prayers, BarbK! *hugs* I pray daily that Brier will finally come to think cats are boring--and then he will stop being reactive and JD can start ruling the roost! I was just thinking this morning about what would have happened to JD if he hadn't made it here. We've been seeing huge raccoons in the evening and hearing lots of coyotes. That means the wolves have probably moved on, but the coyotes or coons have no bias against cat meat. Plus with the hot, muggy and rainy weather we've been having...and JD being sick... Well, I don't think he'd still be alive if he hadn't managed to come up the drive just as I was going outside to take in the feeders. Still can't believe his heartless owners dumped him. downylover, the air biting/tail-wagging routine made me laugh! And the cat that liked to mess with her mind! LOL

Someone at a recent party we attended told me she didn't like cats and made a terrible face. I found it so offensive, but kept it to myself. Too bad the person who abandoned your sweet cat didn't find an end similar to what he would have suffered had he not been rescued, like being attacked by wolves.

It'll be a slow process, I think, l2b--but we work on it day by day. Yesterday we cleaned off some of the sills at the basement windows so JD could look out. He fits right in--he likes watching hummingbirds! And it gives the dogs an opportunity to watch him without having a human hovering anxiously over their shoulders! Attachment DeletedDoesn't she look guilty? LOL "Honest, Ma! We're not doin' nuttin'!" Attachment DeletedGrace seems to really love JD. She sneaks down past me every time I open the basement door so she can go visiting. She seems a little nervous while she's there, but she's totally fascinated!! Seriously, BarbK--I'd love to have the guy who dumped JD spend just one night out there alone--in rain and skeeters and kept awake by the coyotes and bears. Really makes me mad that anyone could do that to a pet.
