We had our first big snow of the year yesterday after 3 or so small storms. It was a blizzard, 15.8" of snow. Poor birdies. I was well stocked and dug out to them 3 times during the storm so they all ate well. I had at least a dozen blues jays and counted 18 cardinals. I was able to free the heated birdbath and even with this extreme cold its keeping the water from freezing after I unburied it. Today, after the storm I have a lot of birds but nothing like yesterday. The water is as popular as the food. They (& I!!) will be happy when the temps get back to more normal on Tuesday/Wednesday.
I know most of the country is freezing - hope everyone is staying toasty warm! Happy New Year everyone!

Holy moley! 15.8 inches!! We have only 4 or 5, but it's been below zero most days since Christmas-- about 25 below for lows and sometimes getting as high as single digits below for highs. The next 5 days or so are supposed to be at or above normal, so it'll feel like a heatwave! But I'd like some of that snow, please! We had to shovel all the snow from the driveway onto the well line to keep it insulated from the cold temps--we just had the copper piping replaced with the plastic stuff and realized suddenly, that if it froze, there'd be no blow-torching it to thaw it...so we just piled on as much snow between the well and the house as we could. I'd like some of those cardinals, too, please! We're having an irruptive year for finches...again... Lots of siskins feeding with our goldfinches and purple finches, and now the redpolls are arriving. Wish I had a heated birdbath, but my unit died, so they only get liquid water for about an hour before it freezes. Still, the siskins wait around for me to fill the bath and take advantage of it while they can.
