We still have a little junco here...I guess he missed the trip north with his buddies several weeks ago.

We have two juncos and about 6 siskins, too. I'm hoping they've decided to stay south to start families this year! The last time I saw the siskins this late in the year, they did nest...somewhere. Never spotted the nest but enjoyed watching them all summer!

I was just looking at Sibley's new 2nd edition and shows the Juncos expanding territory, especially the Oregon - and that is moving into you part of the world.

That's interesting, Lue, cuz I've seen more Oregon and Oregon hybrid juncos this winter than ever before. I saw one this morning, in fact!

My juncos are long gone! BUT, I still have about 4 siskins still hanging around. They're the only winter birds still here. Migrants here now are Indigo Bunting and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. I've seen a female hummer on 2 occasions but a male or 2 come daily. My newest regular is a grackle! Just one, but several times a day and whipping through the suet like candy!

I should have said 'it' missed the trip north with 'its' buddies rather than what I said, calling it a he. It was what we know as a female. It was always by itself and came several times a day. Have not seen it for two days now. We still have white throats and white crowns. We had a male rose-breasted grosbeak Thursday and Friday just out our picture window. That is a few days late for them. Have seen only the one. First hummer was out the kitchen door Wednesday tanking on the massive azaleas. It moved on when I opened the door and I could not tell which kind it was. Husband just saw one out the picture window. Our little indigo buntings have still not shown up...they arrive about 4/16 each year. He usually sees them out on country bus routes but he said he hasn't seen any yet. The trees are all leafing out so it is harder to see the birds now. The azaleas are so loaded with brilliant blooms and many insects like bumble bees and such are working the blooms. I got up at 3:00A this morning to get him off for a band and chorus trip long away and no birds were singing yet but about 4:00A they started in. I usually get up at 4:00A and they start singing when I turn on the lights. We have so many birds and we spend ourselves blind feeding them but they are great entertainment.

Wow, you have quite the variety! 4am is early! I saw 2 juncos last week and that's pretty late but I haven't seen them since. I saw a black and white warbler yesterday. I never had one before. He/she only went to the fountain for a quick bath then flew off.

There are a surprising number of siskins still around--at least 10 at the feeders this morning and they seem to be moving in pairs so it looks like nesting is a possibility. I saw one black-and-white warbler yesterday, too, Kim! Just the one male and he took off. Our rose-breasted grosbeaks arrived finally this morning, too--two males, one second year, one older and in prime plumage. But other than that, migration has been pretty dang slow this year so far... We're still waiting for our buntings, too, birdnutz! No hummers, yet, either, but should be here by week's end. Yesterday, hubby and I were discussing when the grosbeaks, orioles and hummers would arrive. He said today for the grosbeaks (right on! ), tomorrow for the orioles and Tuesday for the hummers. I hope he's right!

Cool! I hope it's got a mate somewhere, happybirder! Our siskins stuck around, too--at least a couple dozen. We had the banders out last Wednesday and saw lots of brood patches, too, so they're not just fooling around--they're really breeding! Always fun when those northern birds stick around to nest!
Did your indigo buntings finally put in an appearance?

Yes, we saw an indigo here on 5/10. We had an RBG on 4/30, a hummer on 4/29 and an oriole on 5/4. That's about all the extras we get here in spring.

How far south to juncos generally stay for the summer? They're usually gone from here mid-April at the latest (Long Island, NY).
