I have at least 12 very fat squirrels. When I go outside its like word gets out and they coming running in from every direction, lol.
Finally!!!!!!, the hawks appear to have stopped stalking the yard all day long. I have many more birds in the past 10 days then I had all fall/early winter. I don't know if its really what has happened but the hawk visits began lessening when a bunch of blue jays appeared out of nowhere. I usually have 2-3 pairs of blue jays over the winter, sometimes just a pair. For the past couple of weeks I have counted 20-26 jays swooping in for peanuts. I have seen them squawk and fly towards a hawk twice and it flew off. Safety in numbers? I still seem to have a couple of jays that don't seem to wander to far. I think its the same birds because the aren't at all jittery if I move around where most in the big group are more leery of me.
For the past week I've had the cutest little bunch of chickadees, titmice and nuthatches who all seem to show up together. The dee-deeing, honking, and squeaking all going on at once is so lovely. I'm so happy to have more bird activity again.
We've finally had a couple of cold days. No snow yet, which I'm thankful for. I'm fine with the cold but not a fan of more than flurries of snow.

Yes, it's definitely a safety in numbers thing with blue jays, downylover. I'm posting a video soon of our blue jays--they're here en masse again in response to the presence of a northern goshawk... This morning there were 85 jays out there! Oy!
Ginny, it's cool that you have an owl serenading you! Too bad it doesn't come around during the day so you could count it for PFW! Looks like you're getting lots of traffic, though!

We were having a very mild winter up until now, our temp. have now dropped to as low as 6*F. above 0 accompanied with accumulating snow and wind chills below 0. Brrr! Congrats. on increasing bird population Kim, especially all those Blue Jays, you and Hazel are running a race for the most seen at one time.

With all the woods it is unavoidable to gather all the squirrels. Our snow is just starting now. We did all our preparation for this storm. My back has been barking at me big time all week since last saturday. I made sure those birds had all they needed to survive this storm. I hope when it passes the pain goes with it. I even brought seed to my neices is tom river and had al fill there feeders up full. Everyone stay safe. Ginny h
