Oy! The only things I get 300 or more of at a crack are finches--and they're more a problem because of the bird poop they leave behind than the amount of seed they eat! Guess I'd much rather have that problem than grackles or brown-headed cowbirds! O.O

I have a second baby red-bellied! Can't tell yet if its a boy or a girl. I'm so excited!
I am not excited that I've had 100+ grackles & starlings the past 2 mornings and evenings. Its what I usually get as the grackles are leaving town a couple of months from now. I REALLY hope that I won't be dealing wit this for months instead of a couple of weeks.

Yay! The world can never have too many Red-bellied woodpeckers!! Just saw the first of the hatch year goldfinches arriving at the feeders today, too! I hope your grackles and starlings leave early, downylover!

I have 3 baby red bellieds now - a boy, a girl and one who appeared for the first time on Sunday that is still being fed in the tree. I never had 3 before. I thought I only had the pair of red bellied but maybe there's another bringing a baby to eat. I'm so excited.

That is wonderful, we love red bellies. I have more in Ma. then NJ. Will be counting in Nj again this year. Seams like the cardinals are still feeding in the trees. I am just happy to know that what I see land and what i see flying is more then we had last year. Ginny H.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen our cardinals in months! O.O Now I'm worried about them... The woodpeckers are going gangbusters, though--all the youngsters are decked out in their new adult plumage and they're all hittin' the suet!

I'd be so upset if my cardinals went missing. They're here every day, year round. I hope yours come back soon Hazel.
I had a hairy woodpecker that was larger than the red bellieds. I've never seen one so big.

Hairy woodpeckers seem to have a pretty big size range. We have at least one super-sized couple and another 'not much bigger than a Downy' couple.... Occasionally we see them together at the feeders and the size difference is really apparent!
