Its the new platform feeder not the whole station that is being boycotted. They go to the suet feeder. The old platform had the hanging chains attached at each corner & the new had it more in the middle on two of the sides. The larger birds can't land on any side now because of the hanging cord. The blue jays figured it out just fine so I'm sure they'll get there. Had I noticed I would have looked for one more similar. I got this one on sale for $8 & I thought "oh nice new feeder for them". He was down on the patio eating the peanut pieces I threw for the cardinals (and he took a grape when he left). I don't know if the station could withstand a bear. The bottom is an auger and it screws into the ground, about 2 or so feet deep. Mine withstood hurricane Sandy, being hit by 2 huge tree branches, a fairly large tree and several blizzards & n'oreaters. Its far more sturdy than a shepherd's hook. The company may be able to answer you, their site is: www.squirrelstopper.com/

Thanks for that link, downylover! I'll maybe fire them off a question.... Probably they won't want to say yes because nothing is probably totally bear-sturdy, but it must be more sturdy than our wimpy wrought-iron shepherd's hooks... Ach! We've had platform feeder boycotts after a change, too, but eventually the birds all figure it out. In fact, we went the other way--from hanging cords to chains--and the Red-bellied woodpeckers eventually made the switch and got to like them....so when the chains wore out and we had to rehang with cords, the RBWOs all complained and started boycotting again! LOL They're like hazel--they hate change, I think!

I am happy to report that both Mr. & Mrs. Red-bellied have landed on the new platform. She yesterday, he today. He did 3 screaming flyovers before landing but he did it. He doesn't make a sound when he goes in for suet so I believe the yelling is a protest, lol.

Love the new poll. I also have that green barn feeder. Had to move the feeders here to the back of the yard. Then in Ma. the squirrel were climbing from planter to this barn feeder so we moved all of those away from the house. Enjoy your new poll Ginny h.
