Three of these birds just showed up to eat the crab apples. They are new to me, can anyone identify them? the size of a robin, feeding on the fruit like a waxwing, bill stubby like an evening grosbeak, color a soft brown with iradescent olive green on top of head and along wing edges. How exciting, lyn!! These are female Pine grosbeaks! The males are sort of a soft rosy color.

Thanks Hazel ! I am excited, these are a lifer for me ! I looked through the GBBC reports and there were a few sightings of Pine Grosbeaks in my county during the Count.
However I did have another lifer yesterday during my Riverfront Park walk for GBBC. There was a red-breasted merganser swimming and diving for fish in the water. There were also 5 Common Mergansers fishing in a group. I see them occasionally in the river.
