Birds have been getting along just fine without feeders forever. We've only messed up their environment. I think our feeders are a supplement to the natural foods they need to find each day. I fill my feeders once a day and when they are empty the birds must find their own food which is the way it should be. My thoughts are that feeders are for us to enjoy the visitors they bring. The exception would be in an ice storm when the birds have an extremely hard time. Even then in years past they've managed to get by. Their biggest problem is the loss of habitat. No amount of backyard feeding will correct that.

Totally agree with your post Fred. I have wondered lately about any stats of who feeds birds. I mean is it mainly middle class Anglos? Is it a cultural thing?

I think it's an addiction thing. LOL I know I do it as much for me as to keep the birds fat and sassy. :-)
btw, Lue--I love your avatar!!

A friend of my husband wanted to ask this crazy bird lady a ? batchlor living small city out side of Newark NJ. works 12 hr days. He said he had some bread he was gonna throw out to the yard for the birds would this hurt them. I told him if he put some butter on it or bacon fat that would be great. Even peanut butter, to which he laughed and said this is not a restaurant. He only has milk and wheat germ at his house. lol I said throw some wheat germ on the bread after you butter it. You realize this is a one time thing lol. Ginny H.
