Lue, I again saw the Mockingbird today. Feel so bad as I haven't gone food shopping (tomorrow) so haven't gotten any grapes. I chopped up an apple and put it on the hanging platform feeder. I wonder why he's staying around. I have to get some jelly out there. I only buy the sugar free, so I guess that's better for him than the jelly with sugar.

That's pretty cool Barbara - I hope he sticks around. Apple's are a good idea.

Barbk, I had mockingbirds eating crumbled suet and the peanut butter/corn meal mixture I make. Maybe he'll eat that if you put some in the hanging feeder?

Downylover, I do have suet out there--maybe that's why he's around. Don't know if I can get to the store today with the snow. If I buy peanut butter, I'll eat it before the poor birds could get it. It's my very favorite of all foods!

The Mockingbird is still here. I notice he hangs around the a 6 ft. Holly tree we have. When I get the grapes, I'll scatter them around the base and also put them in the hanging feeder. Maybe he likes the idea of other birds around. I hope he stays.
So many hawks flying around our area.

So glad he's sticking around! whoot whoot!!!
You might want to buy some of the fully-loaded (sugared) jelly for him, though. The main nutrition birds get from grape jelly is calories from the sugar, so if you use jelly, use the sugary stuff! Not sure what effect some of the artificial sweeteners might have on birds, either--some of them are toxic to other animals and may have unforseen consequences for your birds.

Hazel, thank you so much for that advice. I have sugar-free marmalade that we use, and I've been putting that out. Today I brought some home from the restaurant where we had breakfast but was worried about the sugar. But what you said about the sugar made a lot of sense. Will definitely get that from now on. Thank you for your expertise.
I also bought marked-down fruit at the supermarket for the birds. They are still very good; the pkg I got today had oranges and grapes, but also had a lime and a lemon. Do the birds eat lime & lemon?? Is it okay to give them that, too???

Not sure that they'd be interested in the limes and lemons. I think it's too tart for the sugar cravers but I've never tried the sour citrus with the birds. You could make yourself a lovely citrusade pick-me-up, though!

Will have to Google Citrusade. Sounds like a club soda kind of thing. I'm not much for tart, either, but it might be tasty. I might just put the lemon and lime in my water. Good idea!

I should have started my own thread instead of infringing on Lue & Downylover's. By the way, Downylover, the photos of your Mockingbirds are so cute. Love those sturdy "legs" they have. They are such smart looking birds.

So happy the Mockingbird is still around. Put out plenty of fruit for him, and he was feasting. Photo taken through a cloudy window.

No problem with adding to the post. It is all about Mockers! Nice photo - it likes the feast! Glad it's sticking around and you enjoy the visits. Is it sharing the platform with the seed eating birds like the Cardinal?

Glad it's sticking around, BarbK! Does it like the oranges?

Lue, I have sunflower seeds and mixed seeds in that feeder and to the side the oranges, grapes and grape jelly. When he's there I don't see other birds there, but when he flies off, they come in. They do fly to the feeders next to that one.
Hazel, I see him pecking at the oranges. I can see them. But I can't see the jelly or grapes in the feeder, but I'm sure he's eating them. I think the Mourning Doves are eating some of the fruit.
Before I put out the fruit, I wonder why the Mockingbird was hanging around?
