Sounds like your Mocker is ready to stay put! Hopefully he/she finds a mate in the area.

I would never have thought to try pears! I wonder if catbirds and orioles would like them, too? Will have to try it out this summer. Did you use Bartlett pears?

Hazel, I'm sorry. I just saw your post inquiring about the pears. I believe I used Bosc pears. I usually buy that kind. I did take the skin off, though.
This little guy is always around. I also put out shelled unsalted peanuts for him. Didn't see him eat them, but they're all gone. It could have been other birds, though, too.
He is so cute. He just loves the jelly. He's still not aggressive to other birds. Just flies off if they get too close. Don't see any mate, yet.

Thanks, Barbara! Definitely going to try pears this spring and see if the catbirds, orioles and grosbeaks like them. They seem to tire of oranges pretty quickly and I'd like to offer something with a little more food value to them than grape jelly.

Hazel, That's how I feel about the jelly, too. But he just loves it! I think I'll try apples, too. I know he ate some of the oranges but they were still almost intact after a week or so. I also think the birds are getting a lot of their natural food now. Do you think so?

I do think they're finding more of their natural foods now--certainly the siskins keep disappearing until it snows and then suddenly there are still more than a 100, so they're obviously finding something to eat away from the feeders. We've never had much luck with apples, but I always cubed them. Some people seem to have better luck just throwing whole or halved apples out.

Or maybe mashing the apples? The last ones I put out, I cut into very small pieces. I just refilled the feeders, and as soon as I close the door behind me, the birds all swoop down, including the Mockingbird. I get such a kick out of it. I know they see the feeders are full, but I like to think they also associate me with the food. Sometimes I think it might be noise of the door closing when I come in that brings them back.

I get a kick out of it too Barbk. I love how I see them start flying around when I'm putting the food in and how a few of the regulars go to the same spot to wait for me to finish. I think they see the door open and know food is on the way but I think they know the person too. When my sister walks out in her yard the birds fly in. When my brother in law goes out they don't. They know who the waitress is. The birds in the yard here go back and forth with apple. Sometimes they eat it and other times it sits. Grapes are the only fruit that consistently get gobbled up. A definite favorite of the cardinals year round.

I'm excited that Mockingbird is still coming every day. The pair was here together a few times but I'm back to having just one again. I'm really hoping a baby will be brought around to eat since the parent comes by all the time now.

I have been throwing out grapes as I arrive home from the food store and see the cat birds out front. I bite then in half and fling them over by the trees. I use blue berries that are at the bottom of the cartain for the birds. But now our grapes are getting bigger. Al tried one and said they are still hard. Ginny H
